Dr. Engley-Mark

Our interview with Dr. Engley was my first interview for this series. I was in charge of taking photographs of the shoot, which was a great task to have because it forced me to examine Dr. Engley's reactions as he answered the questions; I was able to witness up close and through the camera lens which questions he was passionate about answering and which made him uncomfortable.
Dr. Engley is an intelligent man and an invaluable, moderate source for this series. It is nice that when we are compiling a series that will air in mid-Missouri to have a local doctor, an individual who spent a significant part of his career in Columbia, as one of the scientific sources. Personally, I appreciated Dr. Engley's explanation of the history of thimerosal, because it allowed me to set some jumbled knowledge into context. Each source that we interview for this series is another voice in this debate and another piece to the puzzle. I can only hope that when all of the pieces are put together, we have a more complete picture of autism than the one we initially held.

Dr. Engley

I had a wonderful Sunday afternoon interviewing Dr. Engley. He is a book. He is filled with information. He gave us a lot to work with for the series. He is quite the character. We had a lot of fun with his wit.
One of the most compelling parts of the interview was when I asked him to define autism for me. He wouldn’t. He said he didn’t know enough about autism to comment. This is more proof to me he is an important, almost neutral source in the vaccine/autism debate. If he would have defined it, then it could be an indication of a side.
Every interview I do, I ask them to define autism. I am getting interesting responses. Anything from stimming to mercury toxic. Because Engley didn’t define it, gives me more indication he rather talk about his research on thimerosal….which in turn, makes him more creditable and his motivations are clear.
Mark and Meredith did an excellent job shooting stills and video. Ryan did an excellent job shooting.

Dr. Engley- Meredith

thought that the interview with Dr. Frank Engley went very well this Sunday. Throughout the interview I shot video for the web, and looking back on the footage later I again noticed how Dr. Engley was very engaging and brought up many interesting points. He was quite a character which made him very enjoyable to interview. Also, he seems to be very knowledgeable in his field of microorganisms and thimerosal and mercury toxicity which I think will come across to viewers. One point that Dr. Engley made throughout this interview, that struck me, was that he did not want to comment much on autism because his research is not necessarily about autism. Because Dr. Engley wanted to focus on the research and facts that he knew, and did not want to comment directly on autism, since he had not directly done research on it, I found him to be a very credible source.
