Pre-natal exposure to mercury preservatives 'is no higher in children with autism'

COLUMBIA, Missouri, USA: Exposure to mercury preservatives before birth is no higher in children with autism, according to a new study.

The increase in the number of diagnosed cases of autism in recent years has sparked concern that environmental toxins may cause this complex disorder. A new study found, however, that exposure to Rh immune globulin preserved with mercury-containing thimerosal before birth was no higher for children with autism.

The study led by Dr. Judith Miles, at the University of Missouri-Columbia, will be published online in the American Journal of Medical Genetics.

I don't get it. With all the serious science pointing to no connection between vaccines and autism, why do you bother to interview unstable, conspiracy-minded cranks like Ayoub? If you look hard enough you could find some flat-earthers, too. What exactly is the story here? That very silly people exist?

The bigger story, one that is just waiting for an enterprising journalist to cover, is the way grief quickly turns to anger and denial, and the way a cottage industry of quacks has capitalized on grief to turn a fast buck. That's the Readers Digest version. The story is a bit more nuanced, and it will take some understanding of how science works to flush it out, but I know you can do it. Just stick to real evidence, expose the from wild conspiracies and magical thinking for what they are, and you'll do fine.
